The cue in the image would cost £325, and yes, I do grade my shaft timber, although not into A - AA - AAA and so on.
The way I grade it is purely by requiring a premium price for those customers who specify a grain type, or pattern in their shafts. The timber in these shafts is not necessarily any better than standard shafts would be, but, they may display a more definite or specific arrow / chevron pattern. At times, it could be argued that people will request a grain pattern over and above the actual strength of a shaft, causing them to choose a shaft purely based on appearance, which can be a mistake.
The problem we cue makers have (especially those of us who actually do build our own cues) is that it's very very difficult to source the kind of quantity of timber which will display these characteristics when cut into the round shaft form. Even the very best looking square blanks of ash can and do show some defect or grain distortion when they're cut into rounded shafts. It can be very disheartening and annoying when this happens, but it's the nature of working with a natural material like timber.
All of my timber is selected by me, in the board / plank form, which is then cut into squares of 1.5" by 1.5" by 59" long, which is then graded again. Only the best of those selected square blanks gets turned into shafts, and even then, they mainly do not have the kind of perfect grain people are often searching for.
When you take this into consideration, perhaps it becomes clear why the likes of Hunt & O'Byrne or Hunt and Osborne now, or John Parris, actually charge the enormous premium prices they do for their so called "best of their range" 'Ultimate' or 'black plate' type cues. It's simply due to those cues having the best materials used for them, and is not because they are any better than much of their other cues, and that's a fact.
